Over the past three years, wheat production in Afghanistan has significantly increased from 3.5 million tons to 5 million tons. This growth is the result of improved support for farmers and agricultural reforms that have led to higher wheat yields.
To control wheat prices in the markets, the government is currently purchasing and storing surplus wheat across 11 provinces, with plans to buy around 38,000 tons from farmers in 13 provinces by the end of this year. This initiative is especially helpful during the winter season when food prices typically rise, as it helps people meet their basic needs during difficult times.
In addition, nearly 100,000 tons of improved wheat seeds and 200,000 tons of chemical fertilizer have been distributed to farmers with the support of both local and international organizations. These efforts have played a key role in improving the quality and quantity of wheat harvests.
These measures not only contribute to increasing domestic wheat production but also help reduce reliance on imports and stabilize local markets. Overall, they provide vital support to the Afghan population during ongoing economic hardships.
